The second pilot Artificial Coral Reef Prototype 2 is composed of more than 350 metal components of 2 mm thickness. The major difference is that Prototype 2 components are off different size and geometry. It was assembled and launched during the field research in October 2017. Because of the material thickness Prototype, connections have more stable bonds between its elements.
The design of both prototypes mimics the geometry of natural coral reefs. Especially fractal growth, a pattern in nature with finite iterated replications of the same geometry at a different scale can be found in several species of stone corals.
