Artificial Coral Reef Prototype 1 was designed as an additive three-dimensional structure composed of identical metal pieces. The existing structure could be extended by knocking off the edges of the outer pieces. The exposed internal connection was intact and worked as a docking point for 100 new additional metal pieces. Electrolyses based on the Biorock Technology started immediately when the extension was connected to the remaining structure. Gas bubbles appeared around the new pieces as a primary indicator. After a few days, a thin layer of calcium carbonate started to grow around the extension where we attached corals using wire.
